Amperesand: The New Power Architecture Fueling the AI Era
A breakthrough medium-voltage platform designed to close the power gap as AI demand accelerates worldwide.
Today, we’re excited to share that Amperesand has raised an $80M Series A, co-led by WCV and Temasek, to accelerate the commercialization of its breakthrough Medium Voltage Solid-State Transformer (MV SST) platform, a foundation for the next generation of AI data centers and high-power infrastructure.
In a moment when AI demand is outpacing global power capacity, Amperesand is building what the industry urgently needs: a new power architecture designed for the AI age, not the industrial era.
AI’s Power Problem Is Now the Limiting Factor
AI’s growth isn’t slowing down, but the infrastructure that powers it is hitting a wall.
Lead times for traditional transformers and electrical equipment have lengthened dramatically, now stretching to 12–24 months.
AI workloads drive large spikes in electrical loads that risk introducing grid instability.
Data center developers face bottlenecks not only in GPUs, but in Time to Power, which often become the gating factor for AI deployment.
If AI is the new economic engine, then power is its most critical bottleneck. The industry needs infrastructure that is smaller, faster to deploy, higher density, and intelligent by design.
This is the world Amperesand was built for.
A New Power Architecture for Hyperscale AI
Amperesand’s MV SST platform replaces layers of legacy equipment with a single, integrated, software-defined system that:
Reduces electrical footprint by over 80%
Cuts installation labor by 50%
Accelerates time-to-power by up to 10x
Delivers market-leading power density and efficiency
Enables intelligent, AI-native power control
Supports secure, regionalized supply chains for global deployment
For hyperscalers facing extreme power density and reliability requirements, the shift is transformative: faster expansion, lower capex, simplified civil works, and dramatically improved energy resilience.
As Young Sohn, Founding Managing Partner at WCV, puts it:
“Without a revolution in power infrastructure, AI growth simply can’t scale. Amperesand is tackling one of the biggest bottlenecks in modern computing.”
Why WCV Is Investing in Amperesand
At WCV, we back technical founders solving foundational bottlenecks — compute, data, and energy. Amperesand sits at the intersection of all three.
We invested because:
1. The problem is enormous, and accelerating
Power availability is now the gating factor for global AI deployment. Modern grids, built for another era, cannot support the explosive growth of compute without a new architecture.
2. The technology is a generational leap
Amperesand’s MV SST is not an incremental improvement. It is a fundamental redesign of how medium-voltage power is converted, controlled, and delivered — unifying hardware, power electronics, cyber-secure control systems, and AI-native software.
3. The team is uniquely qualified
CEO & Co-Founder Brian Dow and the senior engineering leaders bring decades of experience from power electronics, grid-connected systems, battery engineering, and high-volume manufacturing. Their ability to operate at the intersection of semiconductors, power systems, and control algorithms is rare, and essential.
4. The commercial traction is real
The company is preparing to deploy 30MW of commercial systems in 2026, including a mission-critical pilot with PSA International at the Port of Singapore, as well as multiple hyperscale AI customers.
5. The geopolitical importance of energy resilience is rising
As AI data centers, defense systems, and electrification become critical for national competitiveness, countries are prioritizing secure power supply chains, localized manufacturing, and resilient infrastructure.
Amperesand is architected for exactly this shift.
A Company Built on Deep Technical Foundations
Amperesand’s technical roots run deep. The company was incubated at Xora Innovation and spun out of Nanyang Technological University following more than eight years of R&D in solid-state transformer technology.
In 2024, the team completed extensive full-power and overload testing of their system.
In 2025, they expanded engineering and manufacturing operations across San Francisco, Reno, and Singapore and are on track to exceed 100 employees by year-end — building the capability needed to deliver at scale.
This is what category leadership looks like.
Looking Ahead
With its Series A now complete, Amperesand is entering the next phase of execution: advancing its MV SST technology, preparing for its first commercial deployments, and building the operational foundation for scale. The company will deliver its initial commercial systems in early 2026, including the pilot with PSA International at the Port of Singapore, and will support additional secured pilot programs with hyperscale AI and critical power customers.
In parallel, Amperesand is expanding its engineering and manufacturing capabilities across the U.S. and Singapore and continuing to strengthen product validation informed by real-world requirements. This funding enables the company to accelerate deployment of its next-generation power systems and to expand its footprint across critical power, AI data center infrastructure, megawatt charging, and defense applications.
For WCV, this investment reflects our conviction that power is the next frontier of AI infrastructure. Without new power architectures, the AI revolution cannot scale. With Amperesand, we’re backing a team that is redefining what is possible in critical power delivery.
